Evaluation 2nd Year

The last year of this course has been hectic, stressful but thoroughly enjoying. I feel I have developed a huge amount this year but not necessarily in the direction I thought I would.

As I have worked for a large corporation for 6 years I have become very ‘corporate’ myself. I understand the politics and the structure within a large company and because of this I could envisage myself working within a large design company after my graduation. Although I feel I would be very well suited to a large corporation I am now not ruling out the possibility of a smaller company or even freelance design. I began to consider these possibilities when completing the enterprise and innovation module earlier this year.

The last few weeks of this year whilst assembling my portfolio I have discovered my strengths lay with organisation, people management and project management and not with the design development of the project. By realising this I realise a career in project management or creative direction would be better suited to my skills. Therefore next year I will be concentrating my development on these areas of the design process. I hope I will have the opportunity to work on a collaborative brief next year with a colleague(s) who is willing to allow me to project manage.

The skills I have developed this year are a large number of practical skills within design for print and design for digital production. I have been introduced to after effects, flash and dreamweaver all of which I have enjoyed learning about. I would like to continue to develop all of these skills to a high standard. I also learned about the design for print and the technical aspects involved in taking a digital piece of work to print at a professional standard. I would like to concentrate on design for digital production next year focusing specifically on digital typography.
The typography module this year has been a big influence on me. I have found a passion for this subject and I am looking forward to researching and finding out more about typography over the summer and next year.

My dissertation next year I hope will be combining my two passions, typography and digital work by studying and researching film and tv credits. I am looking forward to discovering more about these topics and developing my skills in these areas. I hope to discover the technical aspects involved in making film credits also and I would like to spend time with a digital production agency as one of my work placements. I believe these experiences will enable me to successfully move into a career in a digital environment as a designer or project manager.
